Diffuser, the key weapon

And so the blood flowed freely. And that too badly. Not only very team went for each others jugular on the track but also off it. On Saturday, I had stressed the need for clarity and Sundays occurrences affirmed my concerns.
But what is dumbfounding is the advantage or the disadvantage of the KERS system and the use of the diffuser. The timing sheet will show nothing to prove comprehensively otherwise.
1x1 polls
Brawn employed the diffuser to deadly effect. BMWs Kubica seemed to have got the KERS system right. Toyota did well with the diffuser too. It certainly looks like the diffuser is a key weapon vis-a-vis the KERS.
McLaren, Ferrari, STR, Force India did not use the diffuser and were certainly off the pace compared to the rest who did. There is no harm done as yet as it was clear that the results of the lung opener will be unclear. Once it all settles down and the rules are applied with authority, racing will be as tight and fierce as the Oz GP was.
Every driver was at his best but some at their optimistic worst. The new aero rules hinted that overtaking would be easier and this seems to have been taken in very seriously by some who made attempts to overtake when there was simply no room to do so. But its all good for the F1 fan. Such tight and fierce racing has not been witnessed for over a decade and finally the FOA and the FIA seem to have got it right.
While I agree that Ross Brawn has done an incredible job in bringing in both his cars to an historical 1-2 result on debut, it has to be also understood that Honda was busy developing this car all of 2008 and that too with a budget in excess of a $150 million. They had obviously given up the ghost for 2008 and were preparing to mount an offensive for this season. Yet, Brawn has to be given credit for delivering such competitive cars without having ample test times on hand.

Mallyas team has earned respectability with his teams 9th and 11th positions. With appeals to be heard on April 14 pertaining to the diffuser issue, results can change rather dramatically. Force India may even earn points immediately as there seems to be a doubt whether Bourdais had used the mandatory set of soft tyres! That would bring Sutil to 8th and hence into points.
Force India also seems poised for further improvement as it will use the KERS system in the Barcelona GP. And if the diffuser is cleared technically by the courts in April, FI will also add this to its arsenal. Reliability has been achieved and now it is a time to focus on the handling of the car. McLaren-Mercedes is capable of giving it a reliable and quick power train.
